Automated Profilometer

Designed for use with the O.H.S.U. Oral Wear Simulator, this surface profiling system combines accuracy and ease of use in one affordable package. It starts with two precision ball bearing positioning tables driven by stepping motors to provide consistent, controllable translation. Their motion is automated to execute a programmed profiling routine. Contact profiling takes place though a diamond-tipped stylus with a 2 micron diameter, and a non-contact transducer with 0.1 micron sensitivity. Now the analysis of wear specimens can be done more easily and quickly, and a more uniform datastream can be generated, all at an attractive price.

As seen in the above figure, the profiler consists of two motorized positioning stages. The inputs for both of these motors are supplied by a custom controller box that commands the motors to perform the scanning sequence automatically. The controller box can be easily re-programmed to perform a wide variety of profiling routines. The forward, reverse and stop switches are built into a keypad for easy operation. The platform is a steel plate with vibration-absorbing foam base for stiffness and stability.

A stereomicroscope is focused on the plane of the specimen for easy positioning. The transducer is connected to a data acquisition unit which easily plugs into the USB port on your PC computer. It has accompanying software that easily exports to a spreadsheet. Or add an optional PC computer with preloaded software so that you have everything necessary to make accurate profilometry measurements of a wide variety of surfaces. 110 or 220v versions available.
